DeepSeek Open-Sources DeepSeek-R1 LLM with Performance Comparable To OpenAI's O1 Model
DeepSeek open-sourced DeepSeek-R1, an LLM fine-tuned with support learning (RL) to enhance thinking capability. DeepSeek-R1 attains results on par with OpenAI's o1 design on a number of benchmarks, setiathome.berkeley.edu including MATH-500 and SWE-bench.
DeepSeek-R1 is based on DeepSeek-V3, a mix of professionals (MoE) design just recently open-sourced by DeepSeek. This base model is fine-tuned utilizing Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), wiki.dulovic.tech a reasoning-oriented version of RL. The research study team likewise performed knowledge distillation from DeepSeek-R1 to open-source Qwen and Llama designs and released several versions of each; these designs surpass bigger designs, including GPT-4, on math and coding benchmarks.
[DeepSeek-R1 is] the first step toward enhancing language model reasoning capabilities using pure reinforcement learning (RL). Our objective is to explore the capacity of LLMs to establish reasoning abilities with no monitored information, concentrating on their self-evolution through a pure RL process...DeepSeek-R1 ... excels in a large range of tasks, consisting of innovative writing, basic question answering, oeclub.org editing, summarization, and more. Additionally, DeepSeek-R1 shows outstanding efficiency on tasks requiring long-context understanding, significantly surpassing DeepSeek-V3 on long-context criteria.
To establish the design, DeepSeek began with DeepSeek-V3 as a base. They initially tried fine-tuning it only with RL, and with no monitored fine-tuning (SFT), producing a design called DeepSeek-R1-Zero, which they have also released. This model shows strong reasoning efficiency, but" powerful thinking behaviors, it deals with several issues. For instance, DeepSeek-R1-Zero battles with difficulties like bad readability and language mixing."
To resolve this, the group utilized a brief phase of SFT to prevent the "cold start" issue of RL. They gathered numerous thousand examples of chain-of-thought reasoning to use in SFT of DeepSeek-V3 before running RL. After the RL process assembled, they then gathered more SFT information utilizing rejection sampling, leading to a dataset of 800k samples. This dataset was utilized for further fine-tuning and to produce the distilled designs from Llama and Qwen.
DeepSeek assessed their design on a variety of thinking, math, and coding benchmarks and compared it to other models, consisting of Claude-3.5- Sonnet, GPT-4o, and o1. DeepSeek-R1 exceeded all of them on several of the criteria, consisting of AIME 2024 and MATH-500.

Within a few days of its release, the LMArena announced that DeepSeek-R1 was ranked # 3 overall in the arena and hb9lc.org # 1 in coding and mathematics. It was likewise connected for # 1 with o1 in "Hard Prompt with Style Control" classification.
Django framework co-creator Simon Willison discussed his try outs one of the DeepSeek distilled Llama models on his blog:
Each reaction begins with a ... pseudo-XML tag containing the chain of thought utilized to assist generate the reaction. [Given the prompt] "a joke about a pelican and a walrus who run a tea space together" ... It then thought for forum.batman.gainedge.org 20 before outputting the joke! ... [T] he joke is horrible. But the process of arriving was such an interesting insight into how these new models work.
Andrew Ng's newsletter The Batch blogged about DeepSeek-R1:
DeepSeek is rapidly becoming a strong home builder of open models. Not only are these designs great entertainers, but their license allows usage of their outputs for distillation, possibly pushing forward the state of the art for language designs (and multimodal models) of all sizes.
The DeepSeek-R1 designs are available on HuggingFace.
